At Five Star Plumbing, a plumbing company in Baltimore, MD, we understand the struggles of everyday clogs and backups that may occur, which is why we are here to tell you about the simple tools to fix minor clogs that will save you time, money, and the headache.
Tools To Fix Minor Clogs
Toilet Plunger
Ah, yes. Old glory. The toilet plunger is the tried and true solution for a minor toilet clog, but it’s important to make sure that you have a good one. Ideally, your toilet plunger will create a very tight seal around the toilet bowl’s drain to unclog it. If you’re going to use a plunger, remember to turn your water off.
Auger/Drain Snake
An auger/drain snake is a very inexpensive tool that you can find at any local hardware store. This tool is fantastic for bringing whatever is clogging your drain out of your drain. If you aren’t able to purchase an auger but have something clogging your drain that you just can’t get to, we recommend bending a metal hanger. However, you will need to make sure that you do not scratch your toilet or your sink when you are using the hanger.
Sink Plunger
One of the most common causes for a clogged kitchen sink is a blocked garbage disposal. If you have checked and can confirm that your garbage disposal is in fact broken or overheated, you will need to then use a household plunger. Do not use the same plunger that you use for your toilets as your sink plunger. That is extremely unsanitary and super gross. In the event that your clog is in the curve under your sink, use a wrench to unfasten the P-trap. Make sure you also have a bucket handy to catch the water and debris that might come out.
Cleaners
Cleaners are a great way to break up a clog without causing harm to your pipes. By keeping a bottle of natural cleaner handy and using it from time to time, you can avoid clogs and other issues from arising. It’s important to be patient when using these cleaners, as they may take several hours to reach their full effectiveness.
